Slip transfer

Today I am experimenting with slip that I made from a white speckled clay type: Vingerling K110, which has the same shrinkage % as the black Sibelco clay Nigra that we are using for our next project.

The slip transfer on black clay body

The idea is that we create a coloured slip which is opaque on black clay. For the slip I started of with this basic recipe:

70% dry Vingerling K110 mixed till it powdered. 15% kaolin, 13% potash feldspar, 2% bentonite.

Then you can add % stains or oxides/carbonates to your liking. I added 70% water. Stir well.

I made 6 batches of slip in light blue, blue, light green, turquoise, plain and white.

I then pasted the slip on a piece of newspaper using different colours. When dry I transferred them to a slab of white clay. Later on I finalised my experiment on a black slab of clay as shown in the first photo.

Pasting the slip on an ordinary newspaper
Wet the newspaper with a soft spunge than rub with a spoon to get all the slip off.
Peak and remove the newspaper slowly
